Breaking Up with Stepsis on StepMom’s Day: Regret

So we’re sitting there on StepMother’s Day, and I swear I didn’t plan any of this, but the tension between me and my stepsis had been building for weeks, and what was supposed to be this calm, mature talk about us calling it quits just completely unraveled in the worst—or best—way possible. I remember her perched on the edge of the couch, picking at the hem of her dress, trying to keep her voice steady while telling me we were too messy, too tangled up in family drama to ever work, and I was nodding along, agreeing, because that was the logical thing to do, but my eyes kept dropping to the way her thighs pressed together and the little huff she let out when I said we should just be friends. That word, friends, hung in the air like a dare, and suddenly she wasn’t talking anymore, just staring at me with this mix of anger and something else, something raw that I recognized because it was mirrored in my own chest. Before I could stop myself, I reached over and brushed my thumb along her jaw, and she flinched, but she didn’t pull away, and that tiny hesitation was all it took for the whole conversation to shift from relationship talk to something far more primal. Her breath hitched when I leaned in, and I whispered that this was a terrible idea, that we’d regret it, but she just grabbed the back of my neck and pulled me close, and the kiss was messy, all teeth and frustration and years of suppressed tension flooding out at once. We ended up on the floor, her dress pushed up around her waist, and every touch felt like both a goodbye and a confession, her nails digging into my shoulders as she whimpered about how we shouldn’t, even while her hips rocked against mine with desperate urgency. The regret I felt wasn’t about the act itself but about how good it felt, how natural it seemed to have her underneath me in that living room, and when we finally collapsed, panting and sweaty, she laughed this hollow, shaky laugh and said, Happy StepMother’s Day, and I knew we had just made the biggest mistake of our lives, yet all I could think about was doing it again.
